How to Fix the Nation
Situation
The USA is a very rich nation with a terrible distribution of wealth and a happiness rating of 24
People in happier, poorer nations enjoy
- Universal health care with low co-pays and no connection to employment .
- Free higher education and free lifetime retraining.
- 5 weeks paid vacation, plus holidays and paid sick leave.
- Months of paid parental leave for the birth of a child
- Heavily subsidized, high quality child care
- More generous pension systems
- Better unemployment and disability benefits
Background
The wealth distribution was similarly bad at the first of the 20th century. To fix the problem, the government enforced laws that protected the working class and small businesses and levied highly progressive taxes. By 1960, the wealth disparity had dropped a lot, we had a strong middle class, and the American Dream was alive.
Around 1970, enforcement of the protections was relaxed and In 1982, Reagan dropped the progresssive taxation. Now the distribution of wealth is as bad as ever.
What needs to be done
1) End the Iran War
The Iran war has generated intense controversy because of its legal, humanitarian, economic, and geopolitical consequences. Critics argue that the war is unjust because Iran did not directly attack the United States in a way that justified full-scale military action. They also argue that the conflict violated the U.S. War Powers Resolution and international law because Congress did not formally authorize the war and the United Nations did not approve the use of force.
The conflict has caused major civilian suffering, including deaths, injuries, displacement, and damage to infrastructure. Legal scholars and human-rights advocates have warned that some military actions may violate international humanitarian law.
The war has also disrupted the global economy by increasing oil prices, destabilizing trade, and contributing to inflation and supply shortages. At the same time, the conflict has increased fears of wider regional escalation and long-term instability in the Middle East.
Critics conclude that the war threatens world peace while undermining international law and global economic stability.
2) Impeach President Trump
3) Restore the Voting Rights Act
4) Overrule Citizens United to overthrow the Rule of Money
Getting big money out of politics would open public office to true patriots again — and restore a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
5) End Trickle-Down
Returning to pre-Reagan/Bush/Trump tax rates would free up vast wealth — enough to:
- Give us far better benefits
- Fully fund the needs and responsibilities of our great nation.
• Pay down the national debt and begin recovery from trickle-down.
6) Abolish the Electoral College
We need a constitutional amendment providing for election by national popular vote. A democracy should treat each citizen’s vote as equal, regardless of state.
7) Make the Wealth Distribution Much Less Extreme
Our wealth is trapped at the top. It’s time to share prosperity again.
