Churchill Anecdotes

and History

Winston was on the crapper: when a young MP visited his lodgings to apologize for breaking decorum with particularly vehement criticism. Churchill sent his butler down with the message: “You’ll have to wait. I can only deal with one shit at a time.”

The Cigar and the Bomb: During World War II, Churchill was known for his iconic cigars. One day, while visiting a military command center, he was asked about the ongoing air raids. He took a long puff of his cigar, then replied, “We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets… but I must ask you to keep the windows closed; my cigar is rather strong!”

A Night in the Cold: In 1940, after a particularly intense day of meetings, Churchill decided to go for a stroll. He was out walking in the cold when a police officer stopped him, not recognizing the Prime Minister. When Churchill introduced himself, the officer quipped, “Then I suppose I should salute, sir!” To which Churchill replied, “You can if you like, but it’s too cold for all that.”

The Paint Incident: Churchill was known to be passionate about painting. One time, while painting in his garden, he accidentally spilled a large amount of paint on the lawn. When informed of the mess, he simply shrugged and said, “It’s just a new flowerbed!” His ability to turn mishaps into humor was a hallmark of his personality.

Dinner with Roosevelt: During a dinner at the White House, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Churchill to stop talking so he could enjoy the food. Churchill replied, “If I don’t talk, I can’t eat!” He then proceeded to keep talking, emphasizing how much he enjoyed sharing ideas and strategy with his friend.

A Bold Entrance: Churchill was known for his dramatic entrances. At a crucial meeting of the Allied leaders during the war, he arrived late. To make an entrance, he walked in confidently, wearing a fur coat and carrying a cane. He took a moment, surveyed the room, and declared, “Sorry to keep you waiting, gentlemen. I was busy saving civilization!”
