Samaritans in the New Testament:

By the time of Jesus, the animosity between Jews and Samaritans was well established. However, the New Testament also highlights moments of compassion and inclusion:

  • Jewish-Samaritan Hostility:
    • Samaritans were often viewed as religious heretics. Jews avoided traveling through Samaria if possible, and mutual prejudice was common (John 4:9).
  • Jesus’ Teachings:
    • Jesus broke social norms by engaging with Samaritans, such as speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:1–42).
    • The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37) portrays a Samaritan as a model of compassion, challenging Jewish prejudices.
    • Jesus praised the faith of a Samaritan leper who returned to thank Him after being healed (Luke 17:11–19).

Summary:

The Samaritan had a perfectly good excuse to leave the Jew to his suffering.

Since Samaritans were often marginalized, mistrusted, and viewed as religiously and ethnically impure by the Jewish community. However, their treatment varied depending on the period and context. While hostility was common, moments of cooperation and mutual respect existed. The New Testament, particularly through Jesus’ actions and teachings, challenges the negative stereotypes of Samaritans and emphasizes themes of inclusion and compassion.

In biblical times, Samaritans were often viewed with suspicion, animosity, and prejudice by the broader Jewish community, though their relationship evolved over centuries. To understand their treatment, it’s helpful to consider the historical, religious, and social contexts that shaped their interactions.
